Iñigo Martínez Optimistic About Barcelona's Champions League Prospects
Barcelona defender Iñigo Martínez expressed his strong belief that the team is poised to capture the Champions League title. Following a solid performance that saw them reach both the quarter-finals and semi-finals under coach Hansi Flick, Martínez shared his thoughts during a preseason friendly in Kobe, Japan.
Reflecting on Barcelona's season, Martínez noted the squad's resilience, particularly in their efforts to close the gap on rivals Real Madrid earlier in the year. "In a year that seemed to be going to be terrible, they have managed to turn it around. This is done by a team that is united to turn it around," he told Sport.
He lamented the absence of the Champions League trophy despite Barcelona's success, which included two titles this season. "The Champions League has been a shame because it has a lot of merit to take so many points from Madrid. They have won two titles this year and the Champions League has been missing, but it will come. This team is going to win it,” Martínez asserted.
When discussing the challenges of winning the Champions League, Martínez acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the tournament. "It is a competition that changes a lot. Other teams enter the competition, your desire is equal and it depends on the day you have," he explained, referencing the difficulties faced against Atlético de Madrid.
As PSG edged out Arsenal in a penalty shootout to secure their second consecutive title, Barcelona remains hopeful that they can enhance their performance next season and contend for the coveted trophy.
