Jacob Misiorowski Dominates Phillies in Historic Shutout Performance
In a remarkable display of pitching prowess, Jacob Misiorowski took the mound against the Philadelphia Phillies, who had publicly criticized him for his All-Star selection last year. On June 12 at American Family Field, the Milwaukee Brewers right-hander demonstrated his undeniable talent, leading his team to a 6-0 victory while delivering a one-hit shutout that nearly resulted in a perfect game.
The 24-year-old pitcher notched an impressive 15 strikeouts, setting a new record for the most strikeouts in a shutout of fewer than 100 pitches, often referred to as a "Maddux." Misiorowski's fastball reached a staggering 104.5 mph, marking the fastest pitch ever recorded by a starting pitcher, and he exceeded 103 mph three times against the final batter of the game. Outside of a single from Kyle Schwarber in the fourth inning, the Phillies struggled to make contact with Misiorowski's formidable pitches.
Last July, following Misiorowski's All-Star Game selection, Phillies shortstop Trea Turner had expressed disbelief, stating, "What a joke," and denouncing the decision as "terrible." The controversy stemmed from the fact that teammate Cristopher Sánchez, who had been performing well and later finished second in Cy Young voting, was overlooked for the All-Star roster. Sánchez declined an invitation to participate, which left Misiorowski as a target for the Phillies' frustrations.
This time around, however, Misiorowski silenced his critics with a performance that was nothing short of historic. Averaging 101.7 mph on his fastball, he achieved 23 whiffs, the second-highest total for any pitch in a game since pitch tracking began in 2008. He also surpassed his own record for pitches over 100 mph, hitting the mark 58 times.
Despite the stakes, Misiorowski insisted he did not feel any extra motivation against the Phillies. "To be honest, it’s about the same as the Yankees, Dodgers," he stated, acknowledging the pressure of facing big-market teams. Catcher William Contreras supported this view, noting, "That’s just another Miz performance," and emphasized that Misiorowski's focus remained on proving his worth for future All-Star selections.
With his current performance metrics leading all pitchers in earned run average, strikeouts, batting average against, and WHIP, Misiorowski seems poised for another All-Star appearance, while the Phillies are likely to keep their thoughts on the matter to themselves.
