Christian Pulisic's Early Exit in USA's Victory Over Paraguay Due to Injury Concern
In the opening match of the World Cup 2026 campaign, Christian Pulisic played only the first half in the USA's impressive 4-1 victory against Paraguay. After the game, he disclosed that he had sustained a knock, prompting his early departure from the field. “I just got a bit of a kick in the first half, so I’m really hoping that it’s nothing,” Pulisic shared with reporters, expressing optimism about his recovery. “Taking a little bit of precaution today, but I’m hoping I’ll be fine the next few days,” he added.
During his time on the pitch, Pulisic showcased his skills, tying for the most dribbles in the first half with three and creating two scoring opportunities. His contributions were instrumental in the USA taking a commanding lead within the first seven minutes. Coach Mauricio Pochettino decided to substitute Pulisic at halftime, with Sebastian Berhalter stepping in.
At the point of Pulisic's exit, the USA was already leading by three goals, courtesy of Folarin Balogun's two goals. Paraguay managed to score once through substitute Mauricio in the 73rd minute, but Giovanni Reyna sealed the match for the Stars and Stripes with a stunning goal in stoppage time.
Pochettino addressed the injury concerns, stating that Pulisic was taken out as a precaution after feeling tightness in his calf. “It was difficult for him to work, but we hope that it is not a big issue and he’s ready for the next one,” the coach remarked. Fortunately, Pulisic has a six-day window to recuperate before the USA faces Australia next week. Should he be unable to play, Weston McKennie may take on additional playmaking responsibilities, with either Giovanni Reyna or Sebastian Berhalter poised to fill Pulisic's spot in the lineup.
