Jaguars May Part Ways with Veteran Defensive Tackle Arik Armstead, Potentially Drawing Interest from Packers

The Jacksonville Jaguars are contemplating a significant decision regarding defensive tackle Arik Armstead, who has been a consistent starter for 109 games. After a challenging initial year with the Jaguars, the veteran player rebounded in 2025, achieving 5.5 sacks and contributing 48 quarterback pressures alongside 12 defensive stops.

Despite his recent performance, discussions about Armstead's future with the team have intensified. According to Bleacher Report's Alex Kay, Armstead is among the top candidates for release ahead of the upcoming training camp in late July. This speculation has been fueled by Jacksonville's acquisition of defensive tackle Ruke Orhorhoro from the Atlanta Falcons. Kay noted, "While Armstead was a quality contributor to the NFL's top rushing defense last year and recorded 5.5 sacks—his highest total since 2021—he's set to enter an age-33 season and could be due for a sharp regression."

Financially, parting ways with Armstead could significantly benefit the Jaguars, as they would save nearly $14.5 million. With no guaranteed money remaining on his contract, he is poised to hit free agency next offseason. The decision could also indicate a shift in strategy for Jacksonville, with Orhorhoro under contract until 2028 on a more affordable deal.

If released, Armstead could attract interest from various teams, with the Green Bay Packers identified as a possible destination. Kay suggested that the Packers, seeking to enhance their playoff chances, could leverage Armstead’s experience to mentor their young defensive line. "The Green Bay Packers have been looking to get over the playoff hump after several fruitless trips and could benefit mightily from a grizzled veteran like Armstead joining their side," he stated.

While the Packers currently have established starters in Javon Hargrave and Devonte Wyatt, Armstead could serve as a valuable rotational player, bringing a mix of pass-rushing ability and solid run defense. Should he become available, his market price is expected to be lower than his current $14.5 million annual salary, making him an attractive option for teams in need of depth along the defensive line.
