Jalen Brunson Reflects on His Pay Cut as Key to Knicks' Championship Success

Jalen Brunson has officially secured his place as an NBA champion, further solidifying his legacy with the New York Knicks. “100 percent worth it,” Brunson stated in an interview with ESPN's Malika Andrews after clinching the title. “Even if we didn't achieve this, I feel like being able to do that and grind and go on a journey to try to achieve it would have been worth it as well, but this is definitely the cherry on top.” His pivotal performance in the 2026 NBA Finals, where he scored 45 points against the San Antonio Spurs, was instrumental in securing the championship.

If Brunson had chosen to take the larger contract, it’s possible the Knicks wouldn’t have been able to make the crucial roster adjustments that led to their victory. Now, he can bask in the rewards of his sacrifice, standing as a celebrated figure in New York sports history, having guided the Knicks to their first championship in 53 years and becoming a strong candidate for the Basketball Hall of Fame.
