Jedd Fisch breaks down his play calling philosophy for UW football

As long as he's at Washington, Jedd Fisch will be the Huskies' offensive play caller.

Now, with senior offensive assistant Matt Cavanaugh set to take over for former offensive coordinator Jimmie Dougherty in the coaches' box, he's trying to continue to evolve in the role he's held at both the college and NFL level.

"You get better as you go in play calling, you're more comfortable," Fisch told Yogi Roth.

"This is my 14th year calling plays, so you're talking about somewhere about 14,000 plays, let alone every practice that you script. There's a flow to it, there's a feel to it, there's also a discipline to it. You have to call what you practiced, even if you feel like something might present on that day, in that moment. You have to stick to the guidelines and parameters that you put on yourself for that given week, otherwise you're not being fair to your players or your coaches, because you're holding them accountable for something you never asked them to teach."

"I think when it comes to play calling, there's a philosophy, at least for me...how do I want to play this game? It's not always going to be the same...Do I feel this is a game where I want to be aggressive early? Do I feel that this is a game that I want to sit back and see how they're going to defend us? Is this a game where I'm going to be more player-centric, where I need to get this guy going for a particular reason, or is this a game where it's going to be more about scheme? Where I need to put them in conflict early."

As he continues to evolve in the role, he oversaw a significant step forward from Washington's offense in 2025 under quarterback Demond Williams Jr., as the Huskies racked up 34.1 points and 409.9 yards per game, which ranked No. 4 and No. 5 in the Big Ten last season.

For Fisch, he added that he utilizes the night before the game to visualize every possible scenario to figure out how he wants the game to flow.

"Each year and each time that I've looked at calling games, I've tried to be more cognizant of what is that Saturday going to look like on Friday night."
