Jeremy Johnson Clinches Third Championship, Solidifying Legacy in Mexican Football
Former Auburn Tigers quarterback Jeremy Johnson has secured his place in the history of Mexican professional football by lifting the trophy after winning his third LFA Championship, the Mexico Bowl, with the Chihuahua Caudillos. His impressive feat of winning three titles within four years has sparked discussions about his status as one of the greatest to ever play in Mexico.
In the lead-up to the Tazón México, Johnson donned a T-shirt featuring images of his family, including a tribute to his late mother, Latasha Johnson, who passed away last year. The shirt's message, “We Love You,” symbolized the personal significance of the game. With a victory, Johnson's Caudillos would achieve the historic milestone of becoming the first team to win three championships in a four-year period, thus establishing a true dynasty.
On Sunday, the Caudillos triumphed over the Monterrey Osos with a score of 24-12. This victory marked Johnson's third championship since joining the team in 2023. Although the championship match leaned heavily on defense, Johnson's stellar season—leading the league in passing yards, touchdowns, and passer rating—has made him a leading candidate for the season's MVP award.
Last year's journey was filled with challenges for Johnson, who joined the Caudillos late in the season amidst logistical hurdles that hindered his ability to build rapport with his teammates. Despite an undefeated run in the following seasons, the Caudillos faced elimination in the semifinals. After that setback, Johnson vowed that the team would return stronger.
Since arriving in Chihuahua in 2026, Johnson has transformed both physically and as a leader, guiding the most dynamic offense in Mexico. While he has yet to make an official announcement regarding his future, Johnson has hinted at retirement, expressing a strong desire to transition into coaching. Earlier this year, he accepted a position as offensive coordinator at Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City, indicating a shift in focus as he contemplates life after playing. With his three championships, he has crafted a compelling narrative for his legacy in the LFA, leaving the door open for future opportunities.
