Jerome Haywood Takes Helm as Interim Coach of Chupacabras Amid Struggles

Jerome Haywood has found himself in an unexpected role as the interim head coach of the New Mexico Chupacabras, stepping into the position just weeks after joining the team as a defensive line assistant. His promotion comes at a critical juncture for the franchise, which is navigating its inaugural season in the Indoor Football League (IFL).

"It was just one of those things," Haywood reflected on his rapid ascent, admitting that he is still processing the situation. With five games remaining in the season, he is focused on instilling a sense of structure and accountability within the team while fostering “relentless energy” among the players.

Haywood, who previously coached at the University of New Mexico and Cibola High School, was brought onto the Chupacabras' staff due to his connection with defensive coordinator DeAndre Wright. His background includes experience both as a player in the Canadian Football League and as a coach, which Chupacabras co-owner Mike Fietz cited as key factors in his selection. “Sometimes it’s just good to hear a new voice, get a different perspective,” Fietz noted.

He takes over from Kyle Moore-Brown, who resigned after a challenging start that saw the team win just one of its first 11 games. Moore-Brown's departure followed a significant loss to the San Antonio Gunslingers, prompting Fietz to seek a change. "The San Antonio game was a tough one for all of us to swallow," Fietz said, emphasizing the need for a fresh approach.

In his first meeting with the team, Haywood encouraged players to view the remaining games as opportunities to showcase their skills, stating, "Every game is an interview, every play that you play is an interview." The Chupacabras are currently struggling with the lowest scoring and rushing offense in the league, and their next challenge will be against the Wranglers this Sunday at Tingley Coliseum.
