Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez Claims WBA Bantamweight Title in Glendale

As summer unfolds in Arizona, the sports scene is buzzing with activity, particularly in boxing, where Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez has made headlines. On June 13, Rodriguez captured the WBA world bantamweight title in Glendale, triumphing over Antonio Vargas with a sixth-round knockout.

The San Antonio native, who has built a strong fan base in Phoenix, showcased his skills by knocking Vargas down in the fifth round with a powerful hook. He followed up with a decisive finish, combining a body shot, left hook, and jab to secure the victory. "He was a lot stronger than I thought," Rodriguez commented on Vargas. "I just go in there, I do me, and the knockouts come." With this win, Rodriguez improves his record to 24-0.

The boxing event at Desert Diamond Arena featured several other notable bouts. In an earlier match, Phoenix's Jordan Martinez faced Arturo Cardenas but fell short, losing by unanimous decision despite a spirited performance.

In addition to Rodriguez's title win, the night saw four other fights end in stoppages, including Mesa's Trini Ochoa, who defeated Cristian Perez, and Elias Terraza, who stopped Adrian Rodriguez in the second round, improving to 14-0. Gabriela Tellez also put forth a commendable effort against IBF women’s lightweight champion Elif Nur Turhan, going the full distance but ultimately losing by unanimous decision.

Meanwhile, in WNBA action, the Phoenix Mercury struggled against the Dallas Wings on June 11, falling 85-70 and dropping their record to 4-10 for the season.

In soccer, Phoenix Rising FC faced Louisville City FC at home, suffering a 2-0 defeat in front of a crowd of 3,174, marking a challenging week for the team.
