Jesse Marsch Reflects on Canada's Preparation After World Cup Opener

Jesse Marsch acknowledged that he “didn’t do enough” to prepare his Canadian team for the initial half of their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina. This match marked a historic moment for the Canucks, who are co-hosting the upcoming tournament with the United States and Mexico, as they secured their first point in World Cup history, thanks to a late equalizer from substitute Cyle Larin, following an early goal from Jovo Lukić.

During the post-match press conference held at Toronto Stadium, Marsch noted Larin's frustration about not starting the game but commended the forward's readiness and positive attitude when he was finally called to play. Marsch shared, “Even when I didn’t put him in with the first group [of substitutes] and I waited to put him in until later, he was ready and I just said, ‘look, you can come underneath at times but just make sure you’re getting in the box and finding ways to get chances and score goals.’ He did that right away.”

Despite the milestone result, Marsch reflected on his own shortcomings in preparing the team for the high-stakes environment of a World Cup match on home soil. “The week in Toronto has been amazing and the fans have been outstanding, but I’m just so focused on making sure that our players are equipped with everything they need to be the best that they can be,” he explained.

Marsch emphasized the importance of mentality and bravery, indicating that the squad needed to be better prepared from the outset. He pointed out, “There were some set-piece things that we can do better, for sure.” He noted that the team’s response in the second half was encouraging, but he stressed the need for an improved performance right from the start in future matches.

Looking ahead, Marsch expressed hope that the team could learn from their slow start, drawing parallels to Argentina’s surprising loss to Saudi Arabia in the 2022 World Cup group stages. He quipped that such matches often begin with tension but eventually reveal the true potential of the teams. “For us, it’ll be really important that we use this experience to be better, stronger and more prepared for exactly what we want the game to look like,” he stated.

Canada's next Group B match is set for Thursday, June 18, against Qatar in Vancouver.
