Jett Lawrence Dominates Hangtown Classic Motos Despite Ongoing Injury Challenges
RANCHO CORDOVA, California: Jett Lawrence showcased his exceptional talent by clinching victory in both motos at the Hangtown Classic, marking a triumphant return in his second event after battling a preseason injury. Even with this impressive performance, concerns linger regarding the ongoing discomfort in his ankle, a challenge faced by the reigning champions of both Motocross and SuperMotocross.
The race's dynamics were influenced by a red flag that led to a complete restart, which prompts speculation about how the event might have unfolded without it. Initially, Hunter Lawrence secured the holeshot ahead of Jett, setting the stage for a fierce competition. However, a serious crash by Justin Cooper on the first lap necessitated the restart, disrupting the momentum. Hunter ultimately claimed second place overall, finishing in the runner-up position in both motos. Notably, the Lawrence brothers are currently riding a four-moto winning streak, with Hunter having swept the previous week's races.
Justin Cooper's crash occurred when Mikkel Haarup fell in front of him, leaving Cooper with no opportunity to avoid the collision. Thankfully, he was conscious and conversing with his team as he received medical attention.
Haiden Deegan faced a challenging start in the first moto, initially dropping out of the top ten. Nonetheless, he rebounded aggressively, moving up to fifth after overtaking Justin Barcia and later claiming fourth by passing Cooper Webb on Lap 4. He ultimately secured his first podium in the 450 class with a commendable 3-3 finish.
During the initial restart, Cooper Webb also encountered difficulties but managed to regain focus and secured the holeshot. Jett quickly progressed to the front, taking the lead before the halfway mark of the lap. Hunter, initially in third, surged ahead to claim second position during the latter part of the lap. In Moto 2, Garrett Marchbanks moved into fifth place by overtaking Dylan Ferrandis on Lap 7.
