Jon Anik Challenges Dana White's GOAT Rankings Ahead of UFC Freedom 250
WASHINGTON – Jon Anik, a seasoned voice in UFC commentary, is weighing in on the ongoing debate surrounding the greatest of all time (GOAT) in mixed martial arts. With the upcoming UFC Freedom 250 event generating buzz, particularly regarding Alex Pereira's potential victory over Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title, Anik's insights carry significant weight in the discussion.
UFC President Dana White has suggested that a win for Pereira (13-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC) would elevate him above Jon Jones on White's personal GOAT list. However, Anik expressed skepticism about this assessment during a recent pre-fight press conference. "It's interesting," he remarked, acknowledging that his broadcast partner, Daniel Cormier, often does not receive adequate recognition for his accomplishments in the sport.
Anik emphasized a crucial metric he believes should be considered when evaluating greatness: title defenses. Pereira has only defended his title three times, a stark contrast to Jones' impressive 16 defenses, as well as Georges St-Pierre's 13 and Demetrious Johnson's 12. "I feel like greatness should be judged on championship title defenses," Anik stated, pointing out that if titles were celebrated in Albuquerque, New Mexico, there would be numerous banners for Jones' defenses.
Despite his reservations, Anik acknowledged the significance of Pereira's potential achievement in becoming the first fighter to hold titles across three different UFC divisions. "My gosh, Mount Rushmore is getting awfully crowded," he noted, while also advocating for greater recognition of Cormier’s achievements as a two-division champion. Anik concluded that while Pereira is pursuing an extraordinary accomplishment, there remains a considerable gap to bridge in terms of historical greatness.
