Kate Douglass Shatters 50-Meter Freestyle World Record in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — In a stunning display of speed, five-time Olympic gold medalist Kate Douglass etched her name in the record books on Friday night during the TYR Pro Swim Series. Douglass became the fastest female swimmer in history in the 50-meter freestyle, clocking in at an impressive 23.59 seconds at the Indiana University Natatorium. This remarkable feat broke the previous world record of 23.61 seconds, held by Sweden's Sarah Sjöström since the 2023 World Aquatics Championships.

"I think I'm still in shock," Douglass expressed in a post-race interview, clearly overwhelmed by her achievement. The atmosphere in the venue was electric as spectators celebrated the historic moment, especially when Douglass glanced at the scoreboard to register her time.

She narrowly outpaced her teammate Gretchen Walsh, who finished second with a time of 23.78 seconds. Walsh's performance also set a new American record, surpassing the previous mark of 23.91 seconds that she and Douglass had previously shared. However, it was Douglass who ultimately captured the spotlight with her world-record swim. "I did not expect a world record in 50 free like ever in my life," she remarked.

While Douglass is primarily known for her prowess in the 200-meter breaststroke, where she holds the American record and has won Olympic gold, this latest achievement highlights her versatility in the pool. "I think I just nailed the breakout and I just really accelerated toward the finish," Douglass noted, emphasizing her ability to excel in various swimming events.

The success in the 50-meter freestyle may prompt Douglass to reconsider her competitive plans for the upcoming season. "I don't think I was planning on doing the 50 free much this summer in August," she admitted. "Now maybe we're rethinking that."
