Chris Richards Shines as USA Advances in World Cup with Strong Performances
Chris Richards has emerged as a key player for the United States during the ongoing World Cup, showcasing remarkable passing skills as a center-back for Crystal Palace. In the opening match against Paraguay, Richards completed all 84 of his passes, contributing to a decisive 4-1 victory. He continued his impressive form in the subsequent match against Australia, where he achieved an outstanding 91 successful passes out of 95 attempts, leading the USA to a 2-0 win.
His exceptional play has been instrumental in securing the USA's advancement to the knockout stage, marking the first time since 1930 that the team has won its first two group games. As of now, Richards boasts an impressive passing record of 175 completed passes out of 179 attempts, translating to an accuracy rate of 97.8%. This ranks him second for the highest passing accuracy by any player in their first two World Cup matches since 1966, according to ESPN Insights.
The only player to surpass Richards in this regard is Gheorghe Popescu, who achieved a remarkable 98.4% accuracy with 122 out of 124 passes during matches against Colombia and the USA. Popescu's performance helped Romania lead Group A before they ultimately fell to Sweden in the quarterfinals via penalties.
Richards expressed optimism about the USA's chances in the tournament, stating, “I don’t think it’s ridiculous to say that we want to win it. Obviously, we have a lot more games before we get to that moment, but you know, we take it one game at a time. We want to lift a trophy by the end of this.”
The Stars and Stripes will conclude their group stage with a match against Turkiye on June 25 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, where head coach Mauricio Pochettino may choose to rest several key players, including captain Christian Pulisic.
