Courtois Aims to Conclude Career at Real Madrid

Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois recently shared his thoughts during a press conference while preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the national team, the Red Devils, at their training base in Seattle. As the tournament approaches, Courtois expressed his desire to finish his professional career with Real Madrid, dismissing the idea of returning to Belgian football.

“I’m not thinking about playing in Belgium again. For me, the Pro League is a closed chapter,” Courtois stated, emphasizing that he aims to conclude his journey at the Spanish club. He acknowledged the presence of promising young talent in Belgium, particularly at Genk, further solidifying his decision.

During the press conference, Courtois highlighted the significance of finishing at the top of their group to minimize travel during the tournament. He reflected on past experiences, recalling the extensive travel demands of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, saying, “In the end, it takes its toll.” He noted that staying in one location would not only ease logistical burdens but also benefit his family.

The goalkeeper also addressed the impact of media scrutiny on national teams, expressing his hope for a more positive coverage during the tournament. “Before Qatar, there was a lot of unrest surrounding the team, through the press. That doesn’t help the team,” he remarked, emphasizing that players are aware of their performance without excessive external criticism.

Courtois also touched upon his admiration for American sports culture, particularly the professionalism seen in the NBA and NFL. He believes that soccer players could benefit from their work ethic and preparation methods. Looking ahead to Belgium's match against Iran, he urged caution, acknowledging that their opponents cannot be underestimated despite Belgium being favored. “We respect our opponent. I don’t think it’s a disadvantage for Iran to have to fly back immediately after the match,” he concluded.
