Kendrick Perkins Critiques Vincent Goodwill's 'Participation Trophy' Remarks
ESPN NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill faced backlash this week for his controversial comments on the show Get Up, where he referred to the Larry O’Brien Trophy as a “participation trophy.” This statement arose amid a discussion about the increasing competitiveness in the league, highlighted by the fact that a different team has claimed the title for eight consecutive years.
In his argument, Goodwill suggested that the era of dynasties was more beneficial for the sport than the current situation of heightened competition. “I like to know that greatness is validated. How do we know that any of the last eight champions are actually validated because they have not done it again?” he questioned, pointing to concerns over teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics, who are grappling with roster changes despite their past successes.
ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins did not hold back in his criticism of Goodwill's remarks during a recent episode of the Road Trippin’ podcast. “Here’s the sh*t that pisses me off,” Perkins began. He expressed disbelief at Goodwill’s comments, stating, “That was a bunch of bullsh*t. It was all the way disrespectful,” and added that such remarks suggested a lack of true athletic experience.
Perkins emphasized the disrespect shown to the champions, arguing that calling their achievements mere participation trophies undermines their hard work. He also noted that renowned players like Steph Curry value their victories deeply, particularly the challenges they overcame to secure them. “As the media, we have a f*cking responsibility, man, to make sure that we say and do the right things,” Perkins asserted, urging his colleagues to choose their words carefully.
In response to the uproar, Goodwill clarified on social media that his comments were intended to be hyperbolic and meant to lighten the conversation. However, the message did not resonate well with many, including Perkins, who found the remarks highly inappropriate.
