Kevin Keegan Announces Stage 4 Cancer Diagnosis Following Car Accident
Kevin Keegan, the iconic former England soccer captain, has publicly shared his stage 4 cancer diagnosis during a recent event at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House. The 75-year-old revealed that the illness was discovered after he underwent scans related to a car accident.
Keegan's family and Newcastle United confirmed that he received the diagnosis on January 7, 2026, and will begin treatment shortly. "I was in a car accident and, through that, I had to have an operation," Keegan explained. "Whilst having the scan for the operation, they found out I had cancer." He expressed optimism about his care, mentioning that he was assigned a doctor known for his expertise in treating cancer. "They said they had an absolute top doctor for fighting what you have got, which is stage four cancer," he added.
During his speech, Keegan recalled the doctor’s encouragement, stating, "Kevin, this new treatment, I've got a tremendous strike rate." When Keegan inquired about the success rate, he learned it was only 33%. "I thought it would be 80%, 90%. 33%! I'm still here at the moment," he remarked, maintaining a hopeful outlook.
Following his announcement, Newcastle United issued a heartfelt message of support, highlighting Keegan's significant impact on the club's history and expressing their commitment to standing by him. "Everyone at the club is behind Kevin and sends strength and best wishes to him and his family for the journey ahead," they stated. Other clubs, including Manchester City and Liverpool, also conveyed their well-wishes, underscoring Keegan's lasting legacy in the sport.
