Kings Softball Secures Historic Regional Title with a 2-1 Victory
Kings High School's softball team made history on Saturday by clinching their inaugural regional title, triumphing over Clayton Northmont with a tight 2-1 win at Mason High School. This victory comes on the heels of a passionate fan base that has become known for their enthusiasm, reminiscent of the "Red Sea" supporting the volleyball team during their state championship run.
Senior pitcher Neely McElhaney played a pivotal role in the match, throwing 123 pitches, with 85 of those being strikes. She struck out 10 batters while allowing only three hits and two walks. With the game hanging in the balance during the seventh inning, McElhaney struck out Northmont’s Jabria Bickerstaff, prompting her teammates to rush the field in celebration.
McElhaney's success can be attributed to her thorough preparation; she meticulously studies each opponent, allowing her to concentrate fully during games. "Neely is a cerebral pitcher. She doesn't get too high, she doesn't get too low," said Kings head coach John Schablein. "She has a notebook with probably six pages on these kids," he added, highlighting her dedication and focus.
The Knights took the lead in the second inning when Julia Lowry hit her 11th home run of the season, marking the team's 38th homer overall—a new program record. "To be able to put the team on the board and get the energy started is an amazing feeling," Lowry expressed.
Despite Northmont's strong season, which included a recent 7-0 victory over Troy, they found themselves challenged by Kings' determined defense. Although Kings experienced early errors that allowed Northmont to tie the game, they regrouped and tightened their defensive play, with standout catches from Emma Myles and Grace Parkhurst. The Knights, now 28-1, have been in excellent form throughout the season and are eager to continue their success.
The Kings Knights will next face Painesville Riverside in their first-ever appearance at the state tournament, scheduled for June 6 at 3 p.m. at Akron Firestone Stadium. This matchup promises to be a thrilling contest as both teams look to make their mark in the final four for the first time.
