Kirtland Athlete Lucci Cantini Loses 40 Pounds in Pursuit of Baseball Dreams
How much would you be willing to sacrifice for your aspirations? For Lucci Cantini, the answer is shedding over 40 pounds. A year ago, Cantini weighed 240 pounds as a lineman for the Kirtland football team, but he has since transformed into a lean 195-pound athlete, motivated by his desire to pursue a college baseball career.
This week, Cantini kicked off his senior year at a 7-on-7 event in Riverside, where he and the Hornets faced off against teams like West Geauga, Madison, Lake Catholic, and the host Beavers. Known for his skills on the football field, Cantini, a two-time all-Ohio center, is now looking forward to showcasing his talents at a lighter weight.
“I just felt like my weight was holding me back in my ability to get extra bases off hits,” Cantini explained. Seeking to improve his speed and agility for baseball, he meticulously tracked his caloric intake and adjusted his diet. “I was tracking what I was doing, writing stuff down, figuring out how much I needed to eat vs. how much I am eating.” His dedication to fitness has yielded impressive results without sacrificing strength in the gym.
During the recently completed baseball season, Cantini played a pivotal role in the Hornets' journey to the regional tournament, boasting an impressive batting average of .429, with 19 runs and 16 RBIs. He led his team in doubles and home runs while also excelling as a catcher.
As Cantini gears up for football season, he believes his weight loss will enhance his performance on the field. “If anything, it’ll help me out,” he stated, expressing optimism about his potential to take on new positions. Although he has yet to receive any college offers for baseball, he sees this summer as a critical opportunity to showcase his skills.
“It shows I’m willing to dedicate my time and body to a bigger goal, a goal bigger than myself,” Cantini remarked about his transformation. With two state titles already under his belt, he aims for a third this fall while also looking forward to another strong baseball season in the spring. “It’s been a blast, just playing with the guys,” he said, reflecting on his high school journey, emphasizing the camaraderie and joy of competing alongside friends from his community.
