Knicks Clash with City Officials Over Watch Party Arrangements
As the excitement builds among New Yorkers for the Knicks’ potential first championship in over five decades, tensions are rising between the team and city officials regarding watch parties near Madison Square Garden. On Tuesday, both Madison Square Garden (MSG) and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani exchanged statements following the absence of watch parties for Game 3 on Monday.
Mayor Mamdani announced that the city has “approved a ticketed MSG watch party for Game 4” and promised further information would be provided soon. In contrast, MSG criticized the mayor and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch in a press release, branding them as “New York City’s biggest party poopers.” The organization contended that Mamdani and Tisch “don’t want to see these celebrations happen” outside the iconic venue.
MSG claimed that the city would impose a similar “frozen zone” around the arena for Game 4, ostensibly as a precaution due to the President's attendance. While the Knicks previously asserted that the security measures for Game 3 were unrelated to Trump, the NYPD stated they were coordinated with the Secret Service.
In their security plan released Tuesday night, the NYPD confirmed that street closures would be reinstated for Game 4, blocking off six blocks of Seventh Avenue. “Starting at 4pm, no one will be allowed inside the secure area unless they have a ticket to the game, a train ticket, are going to a business inside the area, live nearby, have credentials, or another authorized reason,” the police informed reporters.
A source revealed that the Knicks believe the conditions communicated to them by the mayor are “restrictive,” with expectations that the outdoor watch party would be limited to under a thousand attendees. However, the NYPD countered that the Knicks had only requested a permit for 500-1,000 people, which the city approved, resulting in a 1,000-person limit for the watch party.
Commissioner Tisch noted during a press conference that the MSG watch parties were anticipated to continue, stating they would be “managed with pens and screening” while maintaining the same security perimeter for safety. Previous watch parties for Game 3 occurred at locations like Central Park and Bryant Park, where reports of large fights led to injuries and multiple arrests.
The Knicks currently lead the series 2-1 against the Spurs in their best-of-seven matchup following the Spurs' victory in Game 3.
