Knicks Face Pressure to Adapt After Game 3 Setback Against Spurs
The New York Knicks find themselves in an unfamiliar situation, coming off a playoff defeat and needing to make necessary adjustments for their upcoming game. This marks the first instance since April 23, when they experienced a loss, following a remarkable 13-game winning streak.
The Knicks fell to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3, with Victor Wembanyama leading the charge with 32 points. This result puts the Knicks at a 2-1 disadvantage in the series. Coach Mike Brown emphasized that while the team is disappointed with their performance, there is no cause for panic. "We have a veteran group. Nobody is 'panicking' or anything like that," he stated. "We feel like we can play a lot better than what we did."
To enhance their chances in Game 4, the Knicks need to focus on several key areas. One major adjustment involves getting Karl-Anthony Towns more involved in the offense. Although Jalen Brunson scored 32 points in Game 3, his shooting was inefficient, and the Knicks struggled when he attempted to force mismatches. "It's extremely important that he's getting touches, that he's involved, not just in the fourth quarter, but obviously throughout the ballgame," Brown noted regarding Towns' role.
Defensively, the Knicks must shore up their paint protection after the Spurs took a significant number of shots near the rim in Game 3. Josh Hart acknowledged the need for adjustments, stating, "I'm sure we're going to change some things and switch up some schemes to protect the paint." The Knicks will need to be more physical and prevent the Spurs from scoring easy baskets.
Lastly, improving ball movement is crucial; New York recorded only 18 assists on 40 made baskets in Game 3, a stark contrast to their 64.5% assist rate in the previous two games. Towns emphasized the importance of returning to their fundamentals: "We have good film. We'll get back to our fundamentals, what makes us great, and get back to work." As the Knicks prepare for Game 4, they aim to revitalize their strategy and reclaim control of the series.
