Knicks Fall Short Against Spurs Despite Anunoby and Hart's Strong Performances
The New York Knicks aimed to seize a 3-0 lead in the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs but fell short in Game 3, despite notable efforts from OG Anunoby and Josh Hart. Anunoby emerged as a standout, particularly when Jalen Brunson struggled to find his rhythm, finishing the night with 28 points on an impressive 9-of-13 shooting. He attempted to rally his team by hitting a crucial three-pointer with just 9.4 seconds left, bringing the Knicks within three points, but that was as close as they would get in a 115-111 defeat.
The Knicks' starting lineup, which included Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, and Hart, collectively managed only 11-of-25 shooting, while Brunson also had a difficult outing, going 11-of-25 from the field. This marked the second straight game in which Brunson, often dubbed "Captain Clutch," failed to deliver the performance fans have come to expect at Madison Square Garden. He ended the game with 32 points, five rebounds, and five assists, but his inconsistency loomed large in the loss.
Initially, it seemed like Anunoby might lead a comeback. His baskets thrilled the enthusiastic crowd, especially a highlight slam over the Spurs' Victor Wembanyama, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Anunoby's defensive skills were on display as well, having recently been named to the Second Team All-Defense.
Hart, who managed to avoid foul trouble for the first time in the finals, took advantage of the Spurs' defensive lapses, sinking four three-pointers out of seven attempts and scoring on a couple of tough drives. Towns held his ground against Wembanyama but ultimately lost the scoring battle, as the Spurs' star posted 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Bridges had a quiet night, scoring just two points and grabbing five rebounds but had a plus-11 rating in 29 minutes.
The defeat snapped New York's impressive 13-game postseason winning streak. As the clock wound down, the once-vibrant crowd at Madison Square Garden witnessed a somber conclusion, void of Brunson's typical late-game fireworks or Anunoby's clutch scoring. The Knicks will look to rebound and protect their home court in Game 4 on Wednesday night.
