La Salle Secures 20th Boys RIIL Track Championship with Stellar Performances
PROVIDENCE – La Salle Academy emerged victorious in the highly anticipated three-team showdown for the boys outdoor track and field state championship, outpacing Barrington and Bishop Hendricken. On a sweltering Saturday at Brown Stadium, the Rams clinched the title with late triumphs in both the 200 meters and the 4x400 relay, finishing with a total of 128 points. Barrington followed closely behind with 115 points, while Bishop Hendricken ended with 96 points.
Leading La Salle's charge was Garrett Giroux-Pezzullo, who secured an impressive four gold medals during the competition. His standout performances included defending his title in the 400 meters and contributing to a 4x100 relay team that matched a state record with a time of 41.86 seconds, previously set by Central in 2016. Additionally, Jalen Moseley excelled in the hurdles, winning both the 110 and 300-meter events, while Judah Mullings triumphed in the pole vault.
As the competition neared its conclusion, the standings were incredibly tight, with La Salle leading with 89 points, closely followed by Bishop Hendricken at 88 and Barrington at 87. This close race fueled Giroux-Pezzullo's motivation, prompting him to clock in a winning time of 21.88 seconds in the 200 meters. “It’s all a team effort. Get a bunch of little points here and there, and we came out on top,” he stated after the race.
Moseley added to La Salle’s success by securing additional points in both hurdle races, solidifying his status as a top competitor. Although he fell just short of a third victory in the long jump, where Barrington’s Caleb Satisfield edged him out with a personal best of 23-4, Moseley expressed admiration for his rival: “It’s really a blessing to be able to compete against him. I’m really grateful for him and hope he goes far.”
In other noteworthy performances, Sean Gray set a new state and meet record in the 3,000 meters with an impressive time of 8:18.90, while the Hawks' Colby Flynn, David Hayes, and Fred Russell dominated the 1,500 meters. The final team standings reflected La Salle's dominance, marking their 20th championship title overall and third in the past two years.
