Lakers Focus on Retaining Star Player Over LeBron James This Offseason

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly prioritizing the re-signing of Austin Reaves over their superstar LeBron James as the offseason approaches. Despite having approximately $50 million in salary cap space, the team faces challenges in balancing their financial commitments while aiming to strengthen their roster. Reaves, who is expected to opt out of his current contract, may command around $40 million annually to remain with the team.

Jovan Buha, a Lakers beat writer, recently discussed this topic on his "Buha's Block" podcast, highlighting that the franchise views Reaves as a long-term asset compared to James, who is nearing the end of his career. “There are two big differences between LeBron and Austin right now. One, LeBron is a short-term solution. Austin is viewed by the franchise as a long-term cornerstone,” Buha stated.

According to Buha, if it comes down to choosing between a five-year deal for Reaves and a one-year deal for James, the Lakers will lean towards securing Reaves for the long haul. Furthermore, Reaves has the potential to attract significant offers from other teams, such as Chicago or Brooklyn, which puts pressure on the Lakers to retain him. In contrast, James may not find the same lucrative offers due to his age and the lack of suitable teams that fit his timeline.

While Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has expressed his desire for James to retire with the franchise, the 41-year-old forward likely has only a couple of seasons left in his career. Reaves, now 28, is emerging as a key player, having averaged 23.3 points and 5.5 assists per game last season. Many analysts suggest that prioritizing a long-term contract for Reaves could be essential for building a championship-contending team around him.

This shift in focus underscores the Lakers' need to solidify their roster's future, especially as they look toward a new era following James's eventual departure.
