Land Speed Record Holder Praises Isle of Man TT Riders
Erin Sills, a renowned motorcyclist with over 50 land speed records, expressed immense admiration for the competitors of the Isle of Man TT races. The California native, who has reached speeds exceeding 240 mph (386 km/h), was captivated by the skill and bravery displayed by riders tackling the challenging Mountain Course during her first visit to the event.
Reflecting on her experience, Sills remarked, "I go extremely fast, but I go fast in a straight line under controlled conditions." She continued, "I have just the world of respect for them, it's incredible." Despite her extensive racing background, Sills admitted feeling a sense of nervousness while navigating parts of the 37.75-mile course on a standard motorcycle.
Joining the Isle of Man festivities as part of the Women Riders World Relay (WRWR), Sills is set to participate in the Legacy Lap, which will feature women leading the event for the first time in its history. Describing the opportunity as a "once in a lifetime experience," she hopes to inspire more women to take up motorcycling.
Hayley Bell, the founder of WRWR, emphasized the significance of this event not only for the TT but for the broader community of female motorcyclists. Since its inception in 2019, WRWR has evolved into a platform that connects and empowers women riders globally. "It’s about celebrating women motorcyclists and giving them a platform to connect," Bell stated.
Lisa Brain, an ambassador for WRWR on the Isle of Man, organized the leading group for the Legacy Lap. Initially planning a smaller gathering of local women riders, she was thrilled when the opportunity arose to have them lead the lap. Brain expressed her excitement about showcasing the strong community of women riders on the island, believing that increased visibility could inspire others to join the sport.
The Legacy Lap is set to commence from the TT grandstand in Douglas, with participants gathering at 08:30 BST before departing at 09:30. Following the lap, racing will resume with the RST Superbike TT race starting at 13:30.
