Landon Donovan Sets Realistic Goals for USMNT Before World Cup
As the U.S. Men's National Team gears up for the World Cup, soccer legend Landon Donovan is managing expectations while expressing faith in the team's potential to make an impact. The former player and current commentator shared his insights with reporters, including The Blast, during a promotional event at Raising Cane’s new flagship location in Inglewood on June 9.
When asked about what fans can anticipate from the U.S. team this summer, Donovan acknowledged their capabilities but reminded everyone that advancing deep into the tournament is a formidable challenge. "They are capable of beating any team," he stated. "That is happening. Soccer’s a unique sport, and one goal can be the difference between how things go."
However, he refrained from suggesting that the U.S. would pull off an unlikely championship run. "What’s realistic is probably winning one or two knockout [games]," Donovan noted. He emphasized that the real test lies in the team's ability to achieve consecutive victories against elite opponents, a feat that has historically eluded many nations.
Donovan also commented on the rising star Christian Pulisic and his potential to become the greatest American soccer player. In light of recent remarks from analyst Alexi Lalas, who posited that Pulisic could eventually surpass Donovan's legacy, the former player said, "He absolutely has that opportunity and he’s capable." A remarkable tournament performance could solidify Pulisic’s status, he added.
This year’s World Cup feels particularly significant for Donovan, especially with matches hosted in the U.S. Reflecting on his childhood experience during the 1994 tournament, he recalled how it opened his eyes to the global nature of soccer. He believes this event could ignite a similar passion in a new generation of fans: "There will be millions of girls and boys who watch this summer and go, ‘Oh my God, I want to be like them.’”
As he prepares to cover the tournament from the broadcast booth, Donovan admitted feeling a mix of nerves and excitement. He recognized the gravity of the upcoming matches, stating, "Honestly, this week did," referring to when it finally started to feel real for him. The vibrant atmosphere around Los Angeles, brimming with World Cup energy, has also heightened his sense of connection to the team and the sport's growth in the country. "I care deeply, deeply, deeply about this," Donovan concluded, emphasizing the monumental opportunity ahead.
