Late Rally Propels Pekin Panthers to Come-from-Behind Victory Over Hillcrest Academy

PEKIN — The Pekin Panthers showcased resilience on Tuesday, achieving their first come-from-behind win of the season in an exciting matchup against Hillcrest Academy. Despite trailing by four runs, Pekin capitalized on four defensive errors by the Ravens, including two crucial mistakes in the sixth inning, which set the stage for a dramatic comeback that ended with a final score of 8-7.

The Panthers ignited their offensive surge with four consecutive hits at the start of the sixth inning, driving in five runs to take control of the game. The intensity heightened in the seventh when Addison Smith made a pivotal catch off a line drive from Annika Schrock, preventing a tying run from scoring. "This is 100-percent the girls. I told them after the game this is why we don't give up when we're down," said Pekin head coach Aaron Ledger. "It took one hit, then the next girl up. Our bats have been good all season, so that gives them confidence."

Payten Coleman stood out for Pekin with a double and three runs scored. Ezra Parsons contributed two hits, including an RBI single during the pivotal rally. The Panthers improved their record to 5-8 overall and 5-2 in the Southeast Iowa Superconference north division, with a match against Fairfield scheduled for Wednesday, pending weather conditions.

In other local action, Cardinal edged Fort Madison 4-3, thanks to Alexis Bissell’s tiebreaking RBI single. Moravia triumphed over Seymour with a score of 13-3, led by Breegan Ellison’s four hits. Sigourney defeated HLV/Tri-County 10-5, while Van Buren County snatched a thrilling 9-8 victory against West Burlington-Notre Dame on a walk-off hit by Teagan Sickels.
