Lions Face Key Departures as They Gear Up for 2026 Season
This offseason, the Detroit Lions undertook a series of strategic moves aimed at bolstering their roster. While many of these decisions are expected to yield positive results, some losses may pose challenges as the team heads into the 2026 season. In this context, we explore the three most significant players the Lions are parting ways with.
First on the list is linebacker Alex Anzalone, who has signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite a noticeable decline in his performance, Anzalone's presence will be missed. The Lions are looking to fill his role with players like Malcolm Rodriguez, Jimmy Rolder, and Trevor Nowaske. Among these, Rodriguez appears to have the upper hand, having returned from a torn ACL last season and showing promise as he prepares for a full offseason.
The right tackle position is another area of uncertainty, with either Larry Borom or Blake Miller stepping up to replace Penei Sewell, who shifted to the left side after the Lions released veteran Taylor Decker. Coach Dan Campbell has yet to name a starter, but Miller has been taking the lead during organized team activities. With a solid background as a four-year starter at Clemson, he has yet to miss a snap, whereas Borom brings five years of NFL experience and 38 starts, including 11 games with the Dolphins last season.
Lastly, the Lions made headlines by trading fan favorite David Montgomery to the Houston Texans for a fourth-round pick, Juice Scruggs, and a seventh-round pick for 2027. While some consider this a fair deal, the value Montgomery provided, especially as a reliable short-yardage and goal-line back, may be challenging to replace. This move could allow Jahmyr Gibbs to take the spotlight, although Gibbs has yet to fully demonstrate his abilities as a pass blocker, an area where Montgomery excelled.
Despite these losses, the overall roster seems poised for improvement this season. Anzalone's departure may leave the most significant void, but with the upcoming schedule being relatively favorable, the Lions have a solid chance to thrive in 2026.
