LIV Golf Faces Uncertain Future as Funding Withdrawn
The Saudi Public Investment Fund has announced its decision to cease funding for LIV Golf at the conclusion of the 2026 season, a significant development first reported by the Wall Street Journal and later verified by several other sources. This sovereign wealth fund has invested around $5 billion into the league since its inception in 2021. Following this news, LIV Golf has already delayed its upcoming New Orleans tournament and is now tasked with finding new investors to ensure its survival beyond 2027.
In response to the financial challenges ahead, LIV Golf has established an independent board led by Gene Davis and Jon Zinman, who will actively seek long-term financial backers. Additionally, the league has enlisted Ducera Partners, a U.S.-based investment banking firm known for its expertise in corporate restructuring, to assist in these efforts. Bryson DeChambeau, one of the league's prominent stars, expressed a hopeful outlook regarding its future and mentioned he has several ideas for potential investors.
Contrastingly, Jon Rahm, a key figure in LIV Golf and its all-time leader in both points and earnings, is taking a different stance. He candidly stated on Tuesday, “I know nothing about business. My job is to play golf … I don’t have the free time that Bryson has to be flying around the country to attend meetings with three little ones and one on the way. Even if I wanted to, I don’t know if I could do it.”
Rahm, who has won the LIV Golf Individual Championship twice and holds the record for the most trophies in the league with 16, views his role strictly as a player. Having signed a deal worth approximately $300 million over several years, the largest in LIV Golf's history, he has indicated that he does not foresee any viable exit from this contract and is not currently focused on the league's financial stability.
With Rahm's substantial contract, a potential Ryder Cup spot, and an impressive collection of trophies, he finds no need to rescue the league. The pressing question now is whether LIV Golf can navigate its challenges and secure a viable future without his intervention.
