Liverpool Mulls Bringing Back Former Academy Player for €80 Million
Liverpool is contemplating the possibility of re-acquiring Jarell Quansah, a former academy player, for €80 million, as they prepare for the departure of Ibrahima Konate. The French defender's contract is set to expire, and discussions for a renewal have stalled since November 2023, leaving both parties without an agreement.
Konate, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for a fee of £35 million, initially faced challenges in adapting to the team. However, he ultimately formed a strong partnership with Virgil van Dijk, contributing to the club's Premier League title victory during the 2024/25 season. Unfortunately, his performance dipped in the following season, mirroring a trend seen among several teammates.
As Liverpool looks to fill the gap in their defense with Konate's exit, sporting director Richard Hughes is reportedly keen on bringing Quansah back into the fold. “One option that has been discussed internally is a move to bring Jarell Quansah back to the club following his departure, with Liverpool still maintaining huge admiration for the academy graduate’s long-term potential,” stated a report from TEAMtalk.
Quansah, who was sold to Bayer Leverkusen for approximately £30 million in the summer of 2025, had a brief stint as Van Dijk’s main partner but was released after just one match. Despite being considered expendable at the time, Liverpool managed to secure a buyback clause, allowing them to re-sign him for €80 million, which will soon expire. This clause will reduce to €60 million next summer, making a return more feasible.
With an urgent need for center-back support, Quansah's familiarity with the club and his progress in the Bundesliga present a compelling case for activating the buyback option. Liverpool's defensive lineup could face significant challenges if adequate reinforcements are not secured following Konate’s impending departure.
