Lobos’ Promising Backcourt Finally Assembles for First Practice

After much anticipation, the University of New Mexico's backcourt trio made its long-awaited appearance on the court together for the first time this week. While fans had glimpsed freshmen Uriah Tenette and Jake Hall in action last season, it wasn't until Wednesday that head coach Eric Olen witnessed the three-man lineup he envisioned two years ago, which includes Hudson Mayes.

During his tenure at UC San Diego, Olen had aimed to recruit an ideal trio of players: Tenette, Hall, and Mayes. Although Mayes initially committed to Central Michigan, he later found his way to UC San Diego following a coaching change at that school. After Olen accepted the head coaching position at UNM, he was able to bring Tenette and Hall with him to Albuquerque. "We actually talked to him about coming to New Mexico after that coaching change last spring, but that didn't work out at that time," Olen recounted.

On Wednesday, the trio finally took to the court at the Rudy Davalos Practice Facility alongside seven other teammates, including returning player Chris Howell and six newcomers. Mayes expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming season, stating, "I definitely have high expectations for this team. I think we can win the Mountain West regular-season championship and tournament championship, go to the NCAA tournament and win games there." He credited Howell for helping him adapt to the team, calling him the "older brother of the group."

In a separate announcement, UNM revealed a three-year scheduling agreement with Saint Mary's College, a formidable opponent from the West Coast Conference. The Lobos will host the Gaels this season on December 12, play in Moraga during the 2027-28 season, and conclude the series in the Pit in 2028-29. This arrangement includes a $100,000 payment for the upcoming game.

Despite the excitement surrounding the new season, the team's first practice was not without its challenges. Olen acknowledged that the session was intentionally low-key, with players adjusting to new offensive strategies. "We're not gonna have the most rigorous day today or this week," he noted, emphasizing the importance of gradual progression to avoid injuries.

As the Lobos continue to evaluate their roster, Olen mentioned they are open to adding another player if a suitable fit arises. Meanwhile, local talent David Lunn received a scholarship offer from the Lobos after announcing his transfer to a prep school in Boston. The 17-year-old guard has been part of a championship-winning team at Volcano Vista High School.
