Luis Rengifo Faces Challenges at Brewers, Potentially Facing Short Tenure

Luis Rengifo was given another opportunity on Monday as the Milwaukee Brewers sought to revitalize their struggling third base position. Despite a promising performance on Sunday that included a run-scoring double and a sacrifice fly, Rengifo found himself in the lineup against the Oakland Athletics at Las Vegas Ballpark, batting eighth. However, he struggled at the plate, striking out twice in the first six innings.

Following the trade of third baseman Caleb Durbin, shortstop Andruw Monasterio, and second baseman Anthony Seigler to the Boston Red Sox on February 9, the Brewers' infield depth was significantly impacted. To address this gap, Rengifo was signed as a free agent just a week later, with hopes that he could effectively fill the team's needs at third base.

Unfortunately, the 29-year-old veteran's performance has not met expectations, and he is now viewed as the leading candidate to be designated for assignment if the Brewers need to make roster adjustments. When Rengifo signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with a mutual option for 2027, the Brewers' management was optimistic about his ability to anchor the position, especially given his combined .754 OPS and 20-20 potential from 2022 to 2024.

As of Monday, Rengifo's season statistics paint a different picture: he has played 52 games, hitting just .202 with no home runs and three stolen bases, resulting in a minus-0.4 WAR. Should the Brewers choose to move on from Rengifo, infielders Joey Ortiz and David Hamilton could step in to share third base duties as a temporary solution.
