Mariners' Offense Stifled in Defeat Against Orioles
In a lackluster performance at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the Seattle Mariners faltered offensively, suffering a 7-2 defeat to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night. The game, though free of delays, saw the Mariners’ bats remain silent against a strong outing from Orioles pitcher Brandon Young, who dominated with seven scoreless innings.
The Mariners struggled to generate offense, managing only two hits throughout the night. Young’s ability to induce ground balls proved effective, as he recorded 12 ground-outs and set down 12 consecutive hitters at one point. His final line included five strikeouts and two walks, making it a challenging night for Seattle.
Despite a promising start from Mariners pitcher George Kirby, who escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third inning, the tide turned in the sixth. After keeping the Orioles at bay for five innings, Kirby conceded a home run to Pete Alonso, putting Baltimore on the board. Following that, a walk and a subsequent double from Leody Taveras extended the lead, with Blaze Alexander adding to the score with a ground-rule double.
Kirby finished the game with ten strikeouts and a solid outing of six innings, allowing three earned runs, but received little support from his teammates. In relief, Domingo González, recalled from Triple-A Tacoma, surrendered a grand slam to Jackson Holliday in the seventh, further widening the gap.
Although the Mariners managed to score two runs in the eighth, it was a case of too little, too late. They still have a chance to secure a series victory when they face the Orioles again on Thursday at 4:05 p.m. PDT. Notably, the game will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN, rather than on Mariners.TV, so fans should plan accordingly.
