Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy played catch on the field Monday after missing consecutive games with a wrist injury.

Muncy took a 96 mph sinker off of his right wrist in the eighth inning of Friday’s loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, and left the game despite his best efforts to stay in. After the incident, manager Dave Roberts was optimistic about Muncy’s chances to avoid a stint on the injured list.

The veteran third baseman sat out of the lineup for the final two games of the series and will miss Monday’s series opener against the Colorado Rockies as well, but seeing him active on the field is a good sign for the Dodgers.

Muncy has been one of the Dodgers’ most productive bats through the first couple of months of the season, hitting 12 homers and driving in 19 runs while posting an .878 OPS. He has a 148 OPS+, which would rank as the second-highest mark of his career if he continued at this pace.

Who Will Play Instead of Max Muncy?

After Muncy went to the sidelines, Santiago Espinal filled in for him for the remainder of Friday’s game and all of Saturdays’s win, while Miguel Rojas handled the hot corner in the series finale. The Dodgers designated Espinal for assignment ahead of Monday’s series opener to make room on the active roster for Kiké Hernandez, who is now the most likely suitor to take over the position for the time being.

Manager Dave Roberts stated Hernandez would feature in Monday’s game, and he will look to get off to a good start to the season against the Rockies. Hernandez has been an important role player for the Dodgers since his return to LA in 2023, and will look to build off of his solid postseason run last year.

After a .621 OPS regular season, Hernandez did what he does best in the postseason and posted an OPS just shy of .800 through the Dodgers’ first three series.

The Dodgers will hope Hernandez can start hot as Muncy continues to progress as they look to extend their 1.5-game lead at the top of the NL West. Their first game against the Rockies comes Monday at 6:10 p.m. PT.
