Mead's Simon Rosselli Claims Third Consecutive State Discus Title, Aiming for Olympic Glory

TACOMA — Simon Rosselli of Mead High School showcased his exceptional talent once again, clinching his third consecutive 4A state discus championship at Mount Tahoma High on Saturday. His performance, while lacking in dramatic flair, was nonetheless a testament to his artistry and skill, reinforcing his potential as a future Olympian in the sport.

Despite being the national leader in the discus, Rosselli faced challenges in achieving his personal best of 225-6 throughout the competition. He established a commanding lead with his initial throw, surpassing his nearest rival by over 50 feet. However, it was his final attempt that truly stood out, launching a 223-0 throw that caught the wind just right. His discus, a uniquely designed Nishi model reminiscent of a ninja star, soared gracefully through the air.

Rosselli's post-competition reflections indicated a thoughtful approach to his sport. "My performance wasn't at all what I was hoping for, nor what I expect for myself," he stated, emphasizing his high standards. Earlier in the week, he also triumphed in the shot put with a throw of 68-0, coming close to breaking a long-standing state record.

With aspirations that extend beyond state titles, Rosselli expressed his goal of becoming an Olympic gold medalist, eyeing either the 2028 Los Angeles Games or the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. He noted the current world-record holder, Mykolas Alekna, shares a similar physique, suggesting that success at the highest level is within reach.

In discussing the technical aspects of the discus throw, Rosselli highlighted the balance between power and finesse. "It's an art, it's a canvas, it's a painting," he explained. "It's my job to put the paint on the canvas where it needs to be." His perspective reflects a deep appreciation for the sport, reminiscent of legendary throwers who have come before him.
