Meet Julian Champagnie: The Undrafted Forward Shining for the Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are undeniably centered around their star rookie, Victor Wembanyama, but a strong supporting cast is crucial for any championship pursuit. Among the promising young talents, including high lottery picks like Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, one player has emerged as a surprising key contributor despite initially being overlooked during the NBA Draft.

Julian Champagnie has become a reliable asset for the Spurs throughout the playoffs, showcasing his skills in critical moments. In a standout performance during Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals, he hit an impressive 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, demonstrating his value to the team.

Hailing from Staten Island, New York, Champagnie made a name for himself in the local basketball scene, playing his high school ball at Bishop Loughlin in Brooklyn. He enjoyed a successful college career at St. John's, where he averaged nearly 20 points per game during his sophomore year. However, despite his talents, he went undrafted after college. The Philadelphia 76ers initially signed him to a two-way contract, but after limited play, he was waived to make room for another player.

Just two days later, the Spurs took a chance on Champagnie, offering him the opportunity to grow within a rebuilding roster. He capitalized on this chance and secured a spot on the 2023-24 roster, evolving into a key part of the Spurs’ ambitious plans alongside Wembanyama and others. Over the past season, Champagnie made 68 starts in 82 games, averaging a career-high of 11.1 points per game and maintaining a clean bill of health for two consecutive seasons.

Champagnie isn't the only talented player in his family; his twin brother, Justin, is also making strides in the NBA. Currently with the Washington Wizards, Justin has found success after a stint with the Toronto Raptors, averaging 8.7 points and 5.6 rebounds over the past two seasons. While Julian played at St. John's, Justin played at Pittsburgh, where he had a notable college career.
