Megan Keller Honored as PWHL's Best Defender During Hometown Ceremony

Megan Keller's achievement of being named the Defender of the Year in the Premier Hockey Federation League (PWHL) was made even more meaningful as she received the award in her hometown of Farmington Hills, Michigan. The recognition took place during a ceremony at One Campus Martius, where Keller shone as a key player for the Boston Fleet, contributing 22 points in 30 games while showcasing her exceptional defensive skills.

"It’s an incredible honor," Keller expressed. "Obviously, though, it’s a reflection of the team. I've got such great teammates. My D partner, also up for the award, Haley Winn. And goaltending Aerin Frankel, MVP, one of the best goalies in the world — makes my job super easy, and it was just so fun to come to the rink every day. We had such a special group, so to be a part of that, I’m just really thankful.”

Winn was also recognized as the Rookie of the Year, while Boston Fleet's head coach Kris Sparre received the Coach of the Year award in his inaugural season. He praised Keller's athleticism and skill, stating, "I’ve said this before, and I’m sure this will ruffle some feathers from players that I’ve coached in the past, but she’s hands down my favorite professional athlete that I’ve coached in my 11 years. She deserves all the accolades that she gets."

Keller, who recently celebrated her second Olympic gold medal after scoring a pivotal goal against Canada at the Milano-Cortina games, has been a strong advocate for the growth of women's hockey in Michigan. The arrival of a new PWHL team in Detroit is a dream come true for her, as fans had long chanted for a team at Little Caesars Arena. "I’m so happy for the city of Detroit, the state of Michigan," she said. "I think they’ve deserved a team for a long time."

Reflecting on her own journey, Keller noted the importance of having role models for young players, emphasizing how a professional team will inspire future generations. "I thought I was going to play on the Red Wings growing up, and to see their role models each and every day and know that they have a dream that can turn it into reality — it’s super special, and I’m so excited for what’s to come for them.”
