Megha Ganne Faces New Chapter with Pro Debut at U.S. Women’s Open
As graduation season unfolds, Megha Ganne, a senior at Stanford University, stands ready to embrace a significant transition in her life. This time of year is filled with a mix of nostalgia and excitement for the future as graduates prepare to leave the familiar behind. For athletes like Ganne, this occasion also means bidding farewell to teammates and the college experience that shaped their journey.
“I think the moments with the teammates are irreplaceable,” Ganne reflected. “Moments in the locker room, I found myself lingering after practice for 30 more minutes or trying to get more meals together... Spending time with people is the thing you try to take in more.” The New Jersey native will celebrate her graduation next week, just after leading her team to Stanford's fourth NCAA Championship in women’s golf. However, Ganne’s professional career is set to begin before she even walks across the graduation stage.
This week, she will make her professional debut at the U.S. Women’s Open, held at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. “It’s a little bit hectic,” Ganne said on Monday. “At the very least I can stay in California, which is really nice. And the weather is beautiful and I'm playing golf, so I don’t have that many complaints.” While she has just a few classes left to complete, Ganne is focused on her upcoming competition.
This marks Ganne's fourth appearance at the U.S. Women’s Open, but it’s her first as a professional with Epson Tour status. Her best performance came five years ago at the Olympic Club, where she made headlines as a high school junior by sharing the lead after the first round and ultimately finishing T-14 while earning Low Amateur honors. “I am hopefully drastically different than I was then,” she noted, reflecting on her growth as both a golfer and a person during her time at Stanford.
As she prepares for the tournament, Ganne aims to embrace discomfort as she navigates this new chapter of her career. “I think just being comfortable being uncomfortable is going to be my goal for the next 12 to 18 months,” she stated. Excited about the challenge ahead, Ganne is ready to tee off alongside notable Stanford alumni like Michelle Wie West and Lydia Ko. “This course is absolutely stunning. I’ve never been here. I’m super excited to get to know it better,” she added, underscoring her enthusiasm for the upcoming competition.
