The New York Mets' pitching staff has experienced notable shifts in the last few weeks, with both the rotation and bullpen undergoing significant changes. David Peterson found himself back in the rotation only to be replaced once more by Sean Manaea, who has shown marked improvement recently. Jonah Tong returned to the majors and has performed admirably, while Tobias Myers has faced difficulties with his role and has been sent down to Triple-A for further development.
A.J. Minter's return from the injured list has provided a much-needed boost to the bullpen, which has seen several players rotating in and out. Meanwhile, Christian Scott has maintained his strong performance, although Nolan McLean has encountered a rough patch in his outings.
On May 22, the Mets summoned Jonah Tong from Triple-A Syracuse, marking the end of Craig Kimbrel's time with the team. Kimbrel struggled in his last appearances in Washington before being designated for assignment, subsequently joining the Rays before going on the injured list after pitching one scoreless inning. In contrast, Tong has stepped up impressively since his call-up, throwing 6 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run, despite needing to improve his strikeout rate and control.
Tobias Myers, who pitched in both games that Tong appeared in, allowed runs in each outing, leading to his demotion. His inconsistent role may have contributed to his struggles; he was used both as an opener and in relief, ultimately resulting in a loss of form. In his place, Cionel Pérez was called up and successfully made his Mets debut with a scoreless inning. Sean Manaea also made two appearances during this stretch, showcasing solid performances despite a tough loss in Miami where he allowed just one run over 3 2/3 innings.
David Peterson's recent outing against the Reds was less than stellar, as he surrendered six runs on eleven hits, leading to another loss of his rotation spot. Despite this, he managed to earn a save in a later game by pitching four scoreless innings. Nolan McLean experienced a significant drop in performance, most notably in a game against Washington where he allowed nine runs, followed by another disappointing start against the Reds.
Rookie Zach Thornton made a spot start against the Nationals, facing a challenging lineup and conceding four runs. Meanwhile, Christian Scott continued to show promise, earning his first major league win with impressive outings against Miami. Devin Williams participated in both games during this period, with varying outcomes, underscoring the Mets' ongoing pitching challenges as they strive to stabilize their rotation and bullpen.
