Mets Stand By Kodai Senga Despite Struggles Against Reds

New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza reaffirmed the team's commitment to pitcher Kodai Senga on Tuesday, following a disappointing performance against the Cincinnati Reds. Senga returned to the mound after nearly two months sidelined due to lumbar spine inflammation, but his comeback was marred by a rough start.

In the opening inning of the game, Senga struggled significantly, issuing two walks and giving up a three-run homer to Sal Stewart, along with a solo shot to Spencer Steer. This early setback allowed Cincinnati to establish a 4-0 lead. Although Senga stabilized himself for the remainder of the game, pitching three scoreless innings, the damage had already been done, and the Mets ultimately fell to the Reds, 5-3.

Despite the rocky outing, Mendoza expressed confidence in Senga's abilities, indicating that the right-hander will remain in the starting rotation. Mendoza stated, “Kodai Senga likely to remain in Mets rotation,” highlighting his belief in the pitcher's potential.

Senga's fastball velocity showed promise during his rehab, clocking in the low-90s, but he reached up to 97.9 mph in his first game back. However, his lack of command contributed to his struggles, as he issued additional walks in the third and fourth innings. Following the game, Senga's ERA ballooned to 9.00 over six starts, and he holds an 0-5 record with 28 strikeouts and 17 walks.

The Mets are hopeful that Senga can regain his command and find his rhythm in his next outing, which is anticipated to occur next week.
