Michigan Football Faces Setback as 2027 Safety Recruit Switches Commitment to Minnesota
Michigan's 2027 recruiting class took a hit on Sunday when three-star safety Maxwell Miles from Centennial High School in Las Vegas announced he would be committing to Minnesota. Miles had previously pledged to the Wolverines in March during a wave of early commitments for the program.
The shift in allegiance comes after Miles visited Minnesota over the weekend, leading him to choose the Golden Gophers over several other options, including Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and San Diego State. His decision marks the second safety decommitment for Michigan in this cycle, following Darrell Mattison's recent switch to Ole Miss.
As of now, Michigan holds 14 commitments for the 2027 class as they head into June. Miles had developed a strong rapport with safeties coach Tyler Stockton, who played a key role in recruiting him to Michigan. "Me and Coach Stockton have a good relationship," Miles shared with Maize n Brew. "He keeps it real with me and pushes me to be better, and I respect that a lot."
In addition to Miles, Michigan's current 2027 class includes two safeties: four-star Tavares Harrington and three-star Charles Woodson Jr. The group is rounded out with a diverse mix of talent, featuring a four-star tight end, cornerback, and several offensive and defensive players, positioning the class as the 10th best in the FBS and fourth in the Big Ten, according to Rivals.
