Michigan State opens Big Ten Tournament with 8-4 win over Purdue
The Big Ten baseball tournament began on Tuesday, with the No. 12 seeded Spartans playing against the No. 5 seeded Purdue Boilermakers. Michigan State was able to defeat the Boilermakers, 8-4, en route to the opening round win.
The win by MSU is the first by a No. 12 seed in the history of the Big Ten Tournament, while also being the Spartans first win in the tournament since 2023.
After a seven run onslaught from the Spartans in the opening two innings, the team had to hang on to their massive lead, which got dicey towards the end, but eventually came out in favor of MSU.
Aiden Donovan's efforts on the mound led the way, going 7.2 innings, giving up just two runs on five hits. Offensively, eight of the nine players in the MSU lineup got a hit, with Randy Seymour leading the way with three RBIs, while Khamaree Thomas had two RBIs.
Michigan State now will await the winner of Illinois and Iowa, for a right to move on to the single elimination round of the Big Ten Tournament.
