Mid-Major Golfer Achieves Remarkable 91-Hole Bogey-Free Streak

CARLSBAD, Calif. – In the world of golf, records often fade into obscurity, much like lost historical manuscripts. However, Louisiana senior Malan Potgieter is making headlines with a staggering feat: a bogey-free streak of 91 consecutive holes, a mark that may be unprecedented in NCAA history. Hailing from Kirkwood, South Africa, Potgieter not only showcases his talent on the course but also stands apart from PGA Tour player Aldrich Potgieter, despite sharing the same last name.

Potgieter's remarkable run continued this weekend at the NCAA Championship, where he carded his second consecutive 4-under 68, surpassing the previous NCAA record of 74 holes without a bogey, set by Alabama's Bobby Wyatt in 2014. Tiger Woods holds the professional record with 110 holes, while Jin Young Ko achieved 114 consecutive bogey-free holes in 2019.

Playing alongside Alabama's William Jennings, Potgieter received commendations from various coaches, including Jay Seawell, who was Wyatt's coach. "This all just reinforces that I’m a good ball-striker and my golf IQ is pretty good,” Potgieter remarked, as he sits at 8 under par, just two strokes behind the leader, Arizona’s Filip Jakubcik. He adds, “It’s nice to not make bogeys. Even like today, I feel like I didn’t play that great, didn’t make that many putts, but I’m still in contention because I didn’t make any bogeys.”

His closest encounter with a bogey came on the par-4 first hole of his round, where he skillfully recovered from a challenging position to save par. Reflecting on his mental approach, Potgieter stated, “When I'm over a putt I think about it, but I think it helps me focus more.”

Potgieter's journey to collegiate golf wasn’t without its challenges. Growing up in a small town without stoplights, he honed his skills on the modest Kirkwood Golf Club. “It was an absolute goat track,” he recalled, emphasizing that his humble beginnings have greatly influenced his current success. After struggling with his putting in high school, a switch to the broomstick putter helped him improve significantly.

According to Louisiana head coach Theo Sliman, Potgieter possesses an exceptional mental game. “He’s better than any player I’ve ever been around,” Sliman noted, highlighting Potgieter's disciplined approach to his game. By setting realistic goals upon joining the team, Potgieter has consistently improved his performance and aims to inspire younger players with his achievements at a mid-major institution.
