Mike McDaniel’s Strategy to Elevate Justin Herbert Takes Shape

El Segundo, California – The Los Angeles Chargers are making strides as quarterback Justin Herbert engages in drills during organized team activities. With Mike McDaniel stepping in as the new offensive coordinator, many are optimistic about the potential impact on Herbert's game. McDaniel, who was brought on board by Jim Harbaugh, expressed admiration for Herbert right from the start, stating, “I’ve got a quarterback who I’ve always admired.” This partnership aims to help Herbert overcome his playoff struggles, having yet to secure a win in three postseason appearances.

After a recent playoff defeat to New England, Herbert emphasized the importance of improving in critical games, saying, “It’s a good motivating tool, definitely something you can look back on and push yourself throughout the offseason.” As Herbert enters his seventh NFL season, he will work with his fifth offensive coordinator in McDaniel, who is unique in that he comes from the Kyle Shanahan coaching lineage. Herbert noted, “I could tell we were going to get along really quickly.”

Impressively, McDaniel prepared an extensive presentation, compiling around 100 clips that included footage of both the Chargers and examples of desired improvements. Herbert found the insights particularly striking, stating, “It was really cool and an offense I haven't really seen before.” McDaniel’s commitment is evident; he has meticulously reviewed every throw Herbert has made in the NFL, leading to discussions about plays Herbert had difficulty recalling himself.

In a recent practice session, Herbert focused on refining his footwork rather than throwing, aligning with McDaniel’s emphasis on technique. Herbert explained, “It was an opportunity to rest today and work on my footwork,” demonstrating his trust in McDaniel's approach. The quickness of the ball release during these practices has been notable, with Herbert connecting swiftly with receivers, a shift in strategy for the Chargers.

As they continue to develop their offense, Herbert remarked on the importance of timing, stating, “Getting the ball out quick and the emphasis of getting the ball out before the receivers are even looking for it, that’s the new part.” With new dynamics in both coaching and player positions, including the addition of center Tyler Biadasz, the Chargers are hopeful for a transformative season ahead.
