Mitch Johnson's Strategy for De'Aaron Fox in Game 5 of NBA Finals Fails Spectacularly
In a disappointing turn of events, De'Aaron Fox became a focal point for criticism following the San Antonio Spurs' Game 4 loss against the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. Despite his popularity, Fox's performance did not reflect well on him, especially in the final moments of the game where his decisions proved costly.
With just under 15 seconds left and the Spurs clinging to a narrow one-point lead, Fox had a golden opportunity to increase their advantage. After successfully stealing the ball, he could have either dribbled to the foul line or taken a more strategic approach. Instead, he opted for a left-handed layup, which was swiftly blocked by OG Anunoby. This critical moment allowed the Knicks to stage a remarkable 29-point comeback, leaving San Antonio in a precarious 3-1 series deficit.
Head coach Mitch Johnson, facing the aftermath of the team's collapse, was questioned about Fox's late-game errors. Rather than suggesting potential changes, the 39-year-old coach doubled down on his support for Fox, stating, "I don’t get into social media. I think I’ve probably been fired 212 times, and we’ve traded Fox 72 times. People have their opinions. I don’t care. De’Aaron Fox will have the ball in his hands at the end of the game tomorrow, and I have nothing but the utmost confidence that he’s gonna deliver like he’s done countless times for us."
However, Johnson's faith in Fox did not yield the desired results. In the critical fourth quarter of the Spurs' elimination game, Fox was unable to secure a single field goal, finishing the match with seven points and dismal shooting percentages of 20% from the field and 12.5% from beyond the arc. Consequently, the Spurs faced a 94-90 defeat and were eliminated from the Finals, missing an opportunity to extend the series.
While Johnson's coaching career holds promise, he now must reconcile his unwavering trust in a player who struggled under pressure, ultimately leading to San Antonio's downfall in a series that many believed was winnable.
