Mitch Marner's Teammates Rally Behind Him Ahead of Stanley Cup Final

Mitch Marner is set to compete for the Stanley Cup tomorrow night as his Vegas Golden Knights face off against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Marner's journey to this point has been filled with challenges, particularly during his years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where playoff disappointments were frequent. However, a single season in Vegas has propelled him into a position for the ultimate achievement in hockey.

As Marner prepares for this monumental game, his teammates are voicing their support. “As a teammate and a friend of his, and somebody that cares about him and his family, of course I do,” Jack Eichel said during the Stanley Cup Final media day. He continued, “I think the world of Mitch. Anybody that has negative or bad things to say about him, obviously I disagree with, because I think highly of him.”

Eichel also shared how he and Marner have confided in each other about their experiences, adding, “Mitch has opened up to me about some of the things that he went through and I've opened up to him about some of the things I went through. I think it's probably good for both of us to have done that.” He expressed concern over the negative remarks directed at Marner, emphasizing his admiration for him as a person.

Marner himself revealed that the persistent criticism he faced while playing in Toronto took a toll on his mental and physical well-being. “It became a real mental grind,” he stated. In contrast, he feels liberated in Vegas, which has allowed him to elevate his game. Vegas General Manager Kelly McCrimmon noted the importance of team depth, stating, “I think our team is deeper and a better team than what he had played on in Toronto." He praised Marner’s confidence and enjoyment of the moment.

With his focus firmly on the present, Marner remarked, “I'm not a guy that lives in the past. I'm in the present. I'm here in the moment. Like I said, I'm extremely excited to get going.”
