The New York Mets have one of the worst records in Major League Baseball at 22-30 heading into Sunday's matchup against the Miami Marlins.
With how bad the 2026 season has gone, it would not be a surprise if the Mets' struggles continued, and they wound up as sellers by the August 3rd trade deadline.
MLB insider for USA Today, Bob Nightengale, believes that the Mets will have "no choice" but to operate as clear sellers at this year's deadline.
Mets have 'no choice' but to sell at trade deadline per MLB insider
"They'll have no choice but to wave the white flag at the deadline, and unload starter Freddy Peralta, and perhaps infielders Brett Baty and Mark Vientos, too," Nightengale writes.
The Mets acting as sellers at the 2026 trade deadline seemed like an impossibility before the season began, given how much they invested into the team.
But, if the Mets can't bring their 22-30 record closer to .500, then it would not be a surprise at all if the Mets wound up selling at the deadline.
In fact, it would be strange if they didn't sell if they're out of the playoff race by the August 3rd deadline.
David Stearns and Steve Cohen will have some quality players worth drawing trade interest, with Freddy Peralta one of those players who could bring back a strong return.

It might not be as much as they gave up over the offseason to get him, but it'd be more than they would get if they simply let him walk over the offseason.
Add in Mark Vientos, Brett Baty, and potentially others like Luis Robert Jr. or Devin Williams, and the Mets might be very active sellers at this year's deadline.
While 2026 might not have gone to plan, they will still have the core of their roster in Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Nolan McLean ready to lead the way in 2027 and beyond.
It might be a sell-off at this year's deadline, but that doesn't mean they can't have a quick turnaround for the 2027 season to be playoff contenders after a lost season in 2026.
