MLB to Interview Dodgers Surgeon Amid PED Controversy Involving Conor McGregor

Major League Baseball is set to speak with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who serves as the executive director of medical services for both the Dodgers and the Rams, following a New York Times article claiming he endorsed the therapeutic use of performance-enhancing drugs for UFC fighter Conor McGregor during his recovery from a serious leg injury. Sources familiar with the situation have shared this information with The California Post.

It is important to note that this inquiry by MLB is not classified as an official investigation. Dr. ElAttrache’s position with the Dodgers is not anticipated to change as a result of this situation. He has firmly denied any misconduct when contacted by The California Post, stating, “I look forward to answering whatever questions they may have.”

A respected sports surgeon, ElAttrache has treated numerous high-profile athletes across various sports, in addition to his work with Hollywood stars. According to the Times, he performed surgery on McGregor's leg after it was broken during a 2021 fight. Subsequently, ElAttrache is reported to have written a letter supporting McGregor's request for a special exemption that would permit the use of performance-enhancing drugs without penalties.

ElAttrache clarified that he directed McGregor to specialists for bone healing post-surgery due to concerns about the recovery process, emphasizing, “I don’t prescribe hormone or steroid treatment.” He confirmed that his support for McGregor's exemption request was based on advice from medical consultants who believed such treatment could assist in McGregor’s recovery.

He further explained to The Times that the classification of certain drugs as “banned” does not imply they lack legitimate medical applications. “There are many ‘banned drugs’ on the list which are necessary to medically treat various conditions,” he said, underscoring the rationale behind therapeutic use exemptions.

Despite ElAttrache's support, McGregor's request for the exemption was ultimately denied. Following this, he quietly exited the UFC’s anti-doping program, escaping drug testing. Speculation about McGregor potentially using performance-enhancing drugs during his recovery continues, with two anonymous sources alleging that UFC officials became aware of his use of banned substances while he was not subject to testing. Last year, McGregor received an 18-month suspension from the UFC for breaching testing regulations.
