Moana Pasifika Concludes Super Rugby Journey with Emotional Victory

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Moana Pasifika's four-year participation in Super Rugby came to an end in a dramatic fashion on Saturday, as they broke a 12-match losing streak by defeating the playoff-bound Brumbies 21-19 in their final game. Despite finishing the match with only 14 players after center Faletoi Peni received a red card, the team managed to secure just their second win of the season.

The joy of victory was tempered by a sense of loss, as players and staff gathered in a circle post-match to sing a heartfelt hymn, reflecting both pride and sorrow over the conclusion of their journey together. The organization is currently in liquidation, and while attempts are underway to save the team that champions players of Pasifika heritage, the outlook appears bleak.

New Zealand Rugby has committed to ensuring that players and staff receive their salaries through July, with additional support from the New Zealand government. However, these measures may not suffice to sustain the team, leading to a restructuring of Super Rugby, which will feature only ten teams next season. A group of former All Blacks remains hopeful of taking over, but the presence of a liquidator complicates matters.

Head coach Tana Umaga is set to leave the team to join the All Blacks as an assistant coach under Dave Rennie. Many players are expected to pursue opportunities abroad. Nonetheless, Umaga expressed confidence that the spirit of Moana Pasifika would endure, stating, “The legacy is what we’ve left behind. We have a good vibe and I think that’s encouraging.” He emphasized the support from their community and the importance of staying true to their Pacific identity.

As the playoffs approach, the Hurricanes managed to maintain their top position despite a heavy 47-14 defeat to the Crusaders. This loss allowed the Crusaders to leapfrog over the Blues, who suffered a 59-34 defeat to the Chiefs. The playoff landscape is now set, with the Hurricanes facing the ACT Brumbies, the Chiefs taking on the Queensland Reds, and the Crusaders up against the Blues in the first round.

The Crusaders and Chiefs enter the playoffs with strong momentum following significant wins, while the Queensland Reds also finished their season positively with a victory over the Fijian Drua. Despite inconsistencies among Australian teams this season, new head coach Les Kiss sees potential in the Wallabies lineup, although concerns remain in certain key positions.
