Mobility Scooter Causes Chaos at German Cycling Race
An incident involving an elderly woman on a mobility scooter led to a significant crash during the UCI Junior Nations Cup cycling event in Germany on Sunday, June 14. The mishap occurred towards the end of the LVM Saarland Trofeo, a competitive race for cyclists aged 17 and 18 in the Saarland region.
As the race progressed, the woman inadvertently rolled her scooter onto the cyclists' course, resulting in a chain reaction of accidents. Dutch cyclist Paul Vriesman, who is part of the Decathlon CMA CGM development team, was among those who took a tumble, flipping over his handlebars upon impact.
Despite the chaotic scene, Vriesman reported that he did not suffer any serious injuries. He described the crash as a "nasty crash" in a post on Instagram, expressing his disappointment at having to withdraw from the race. “Sad to have to DNF this Saarland Trofeo this way due to an old lady who was just living in her own world,” he wrote. Vriesman also mentioned that he had been making progress in his recovery from previous injuries and had hoped for a better outcome in his return to racing.
Fortunately, no one involved in the crash, including the woman, sustained significant injuries. The organizers of the LVM Saarland Trofeo have yet to provide an official response regarding the incident.
